Erste Ausgabe. Erster Band des monumentalen Werkes. Die Society of Dilettanti prägte das architektonische Griechenlandbild der Engländer bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Zweiter Druck der ersten Ausgabe, nach Blackmer mit dem Kapitel IV, das erst 1874 gedruckt wurde und um 2 Textkupfer und 6 Kupfertafeln erweitert ist. - Die Folgebände erschienen bis ins 20. Jahrhundert. "A complete set of the Society of Dilettanti's Antiquities of Ionia would consist of six volumes published over 136 years. Volume one, relating to Richard Chandler's expedition of 1764-1766, was published in 1769 as Ionian Antiquities ; a chapter on the Temple of Jackly was added to a reissue in 1785". (Millard Coll.)
"The two Ionian Missions - that of Richard Chandler, Nicholas Revett and William Pars, 1764-66, and of William Gell, John Gandy and Francis Bedford in 1812-13, were a major undertaking for what was a society of amateurs, however wealthy they might be as a collective body .. First edition, second issue of this first volume (of 6), published c. 1784, distinguished by an additional chapter IV of text with 2 additional text engravings and 6 extra plates. With 10 engr. head- and tail-pieces and 34 engr. plates of Greek ruins of Anatolia. 19th century half calf with richly gilt spine and red label. - Partly slightly foxed and browned, 1 corner bumped throughout. Covers rubbed.
