Very rare collection of these gate closing tokens, which are very hard to find in an original condition. - 113 tokens made of cardboard, 50 made of sheet metal, in various colours, shapes (round, triangular, squared and sexangular) and sizes (between 3,5 : 6 cm). Front with indication of values between 2-12 shilling with the inscription "Thor-Sperre", the Hamburg coat of arms on rear. - The city gates were closed in the evening as of 1836 and were not opened before sunrise, the gate closing policy was lifted on 31 December 1860. The last Hamburg city gate was the 'Holstenthor', which was opened in 1852.. - In very good condition.
