This painting is a significant example of Marini's early appreciation of Etruscan art. The Tuscans' pride is closely linked with their long cultural history. Marini's enthusiasm for the horse as one of the most noble and yet useful animals that man was able to domesticate, climaxes in his admiration of its beauty and nobleness. Even as simple creatures Marini renders his horses in a noble posture that adds an almost human dignity. With this work Marini made an important contribution to Italian modernist painting. For its aesthetic effect, its formal closeness and immediate authenticity it belongs among Marini's greatest creations.
