Our untitled stripe pictures is part of a series of works that helped the artist to his international breakthrough. Reyle, who ran a studio in Berlin with up to 50 staff members, interrupted his artistic activities in early 2014. In a first step he drafts the stripe pictures at his desk, trying out scores of variations, placing seemingly dissonant colors side by side, until he reaches the desired effect. His color combinations, unusual for contemporary tastes, and the usage of different materials lead to exciting compositions characterized by aesthetically encodedsurfaces, the colors' values and a rhythm achieved through the stripes' serial arrangement. The artist's aim is to "develop pictorial systems of an iconic quality" (Anselm Reyle in an interview with Tim Ackermann and Cornelius Tittel in: Die Welt, 6 February, 2014).
