Steiner 1781)-1803. Contemp. green half calf with gilt lettered spine. Large 4to.
Goedeke IV/1, 263, 31c. - Cohen/Ricci col. 606 (dated until 1806). - Sander 1121. - Schulte-Str. 77d. - First French edition of the Physiognomischen Fragmente (orig. edition 1775-78), that was entirely revised. The coppers were re-engraved and are partly copies of those from the German edition. The work comprises, among others, portrait plates of J. C. Lavater, Th. Morus, Lord Anson, Socrates, Democritus, Caesar, Frederick I, Catherine II of Russia, Erasmus of Rotterdam etc. - Untrimmed. - Slightly foxed and thumbed in places, as well as waterstained, front inner joint somewhat loosened. Edges scraped and bumped, else somewhat rubbed. - All in all fine broad-margined impression on Dutch laid paper.
