Economic Literature
The field of Economic Literature comprises all writings dedicated to the namesake topic. Generally, the term economy denotes all those activities occupied with the strive for the satisfaction of human needs, or, to be more precise, a form of human interaction aimed at keeping needs and their satisfaction in best possible balance. While individual and family economies were prevailing in former times, the continuous process of socialization of the individual economy in the development of civilizations has led to today‘s national economies. The motivation to this form of interaction results from the two facts: First, man has to work for almost everything necessary to satisfy his needs, and, second, that his needs are relatively high considering the goods available. As, for example, a state or its entire cultural life is unimaginable without economic activities, a sub-categorization of living together in a society has economy as its material basis, which is always closely linked to other areas, particularly social order and the state. The exploration of these interrelations and the examination of their historical and cultural nature, in short, the task of an economist is to research economy and to publish respective results.
The most important bibliographies dedicated to economic literature are, among others, ‘The Kress Library of business and economics‘, M. Humpert, the ‘Bibliographie der Kameralwissenschaften‘ and‚ Catalogo della biblioteca di Luigi Einaudi‘.
First and rare editions of the so-called classics of economic literature realize top prices at auctions. Most remarkable examples are the works by Adam Smith, for instance “An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations“, published in London in 1776, which is one of the most important works of modern political economics, for which prices of around 40-50,000 euro can be realized in auctions. Another expensive classic is “Das Kapital“ by Karl Marx, first released in a circulation of 1000 copies in Hamburg in 1867. Prices in mid five-digit realms are no exceptions.
