In the watercolours Karl Schmidt-Rottluff produced in the 1950/60s, he devoted himself to things in his immediate surroundings for his motifs, capturing the decorative aspects of everyday living with contemplative yet keenly observant calm. Contrasts of light and shade and powerfully expressive contours set off by radiant touches of vibrant colour are the qualities that make our watercolour so stunning. [NB]
