Horapollo, De sacris Aegyptiorum notis, Aegyptiace expressis libri duo ... Nunc primum in Latinum ac Gallicum sermonem conversi. With figurative woodcut title border and 191 woodcuts in the text (of 193). Paris, G. Du Pré & J. Ruelle 1574. Contemp. limp vellum. 8vo. 8 non-numb., 106 (of 107) numb., 1 non-numb. l.
BM STC, French Books p. 230. - Adams H 852. - Mortimer 316. - Brun p. 224. - Landwehr, Romanic 389. - First edition with the parallel text in French and Latin. The famous writing presumably originates in the 5th century and was originally written in Coptic. - "This 1574 edition follows Kerver's 1551 edition in the order of the cuts, except for the translator's additions, which are returned to the end of the volume ... First (?) edition of this anonymus French translation. Neither of these translations was taken from the Kerver editions. The Latin is the Bernardinus Trebatius text, the earliest Latin translation, first printed at Augsburg in 1515" (Mortimer). - The nice title order with mythologice figures from the greek antique, ascribed to Jean Cousin, just like part of the woodcuts. "Bel encadrement de titre avec Junon, Jupiter, Cérès, les trois déesses, Arion" (Brun). The nice, elaborately cut emblematic woodcuts, each with an alternating ornamental border. - Lacking l. 63, unobtrusively replaced by a facsimile in the same style. Slightly browned and sligthly stained in places, with small trace of worming all the way through; title cropped close at the side, 2 woodcuts partly coloured, 1 l. remargined in the lower margin. Inner joints repaired, front flying endpaper removed. A fine copy, despite its shortcomings.
First edition with French-Latin text. With fine pictorial woodcut title-border and 191 nice woodcuts in text (of 193). Contemp. limp vellum. - Lacking leaf H7, skilfully replaced by facsimile. Slight browning and partly minor staining, small wormtrace throughout, title trimmed at side, 2 woodcuts partly coloured, 1 leaf remargined at foot. Inner hinges repaired, front flying endpaper removed. Still a good copy.
