Schedel, H., Liber chronicarum cum figuris et ymaginibus ab inicio mundi usque nunc temporis. With ca. 1800 woodcuts in the text after M. Wohlgemuth and W. Pleydenwurff. Augsburg, Joh. Schönsperger, 1 February, 1497. 17th century calf with label. Small folio. 25 unnumb., 337 (of 338, recte 339) Roman numb. ll. Gothic type. 2 cols. 51 lines.
Hain 14509. - Goff S-308. - BMC II, 370. - BSB S-196. - Schreiber 5204. - Cf. Rücker p. 143. - First Latin edition of the so-called 'Kleine Schedel by Schönsperger, by far rarer than the earlier large folio edition by Koberger in Nuremberg. - Among the numerous illustration, the large amount of city views is particularly striking, as they comprise both views born out of imagination as well as as the first authentic views of German cities, among them Augsburg, Bamberg, Breslau, Cologne, Constantia, Lubeck, Munich, Nürnberg, Passau, Prague, Regensburg, Salzburg, Ulm, Vienna, Würzburg etc. - Copy without map of Germany. "BMC suggests that two issues of this edition are involved, one with, and the other without the map. Certainly the map is often missing" (Campbell, The earliest printed maps, 156, 222 II). - 362 (of 368) leaves, lacking the doublepage map of Germany, leaves f5 and k2, and the 2 blanks. - Dampstaining in the lower third going through (partly moulding), here and there tears (mostly backed), title cut-out and mounted, 1 leaf mounted in gutter, else inside good copy. Binding bumped, covering partly split, with few defective spots and at joints broken.
First Latin edition of the so-called Small Schedel, a pirate edition by Schönsperger in a smaller size and with reduced woodcuts after Wolgemut and Pleydenwurff. With ca. 1800 woodcuts in text. 17th cent. calf with label.
